Many men don't want to see a
urologist. They see no need to go and will flat out refuse to see one. Despite pressure from friends and family, some men will refuse to see a urologist no matter what the doctors say.
What about a Positive PSA?Men over the age of 50 will receive a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) as part of their routine physical. If this test comes back positive, then prostate cancer is immediately suspected. This test does not mean the patient has cancer. Only 75% of men who undergo a biopsy after having a positive PSA will have cancer.
A positive PSA will mean further testing. I am not saying you should disregard a positive PSA. However, cancer is not the only cause of a positive PSA. It could be a sign of a prostate infection or an enlarged prostate.
What about Prostate Cancer? If prostate cancer is found, then many decisions need to be made. Some older men think it is pointless to see a urologist. They will not want to treat the cancer and won't want to see a doctor. This is a choice that can be hard for the family. Often times this is a quality of life issue. If the man does not think the treatment will improve his life, then they won't want to see a doctor.
For men who don't want to see a urologist because of cancer treatment, there may be other options. A urologist may be able to help improve the quality of life without traditional cancer treatments. The urologist may be able to reduce pain and increase energy levels. Of course, this can only be accomplished if the patient agrees to see a doctor.
